Yup, It’s that time again. This episode we take a step back to 1992 for a BBC production that got them into a little bit of trouble… Well okay, a LOT of trouble. Two cases of PTSD and a link to a suicide kind of trouble. This epic piece of realist TV was utterly convincing to many in its pretense to be a live broadcast and they haven’t done anything quite like it again.

CC Halloween Special: Ghostwatch
Got something to say? Go for it!
Very good analysis, though it doesn’t convey the battles fought and lost between us (the creative team) and the BBC – amply told in the documentary Ghostwatch Behind The Curtains (Lawman Productions). It was the BBC who insisted on a cast list in radio times, and they who failed to give a suitable reassuring announcement when the programme was over. (We actually wanted to follow it with a discussion about what had just been seen. In the event, we did not get a chance to explain our motives until the BFI DVD release in 2002.) By the way, it wasn’t the BBC who considered putting a dog whistle sound effect on the soundtrack – as the writer I made that tongue in cheek remark in a meeting and it went no further.
Thank you so much for the info. I’ll annotate the video soon to reflect that and probably post this comment to the youtube video as well. For what it’s worth I loved the show and I’ll consider doing a follow up video and address these points, I like to be corrected when wrong so it’ll be a good thing for me to do. If you’re happy to I may ask you questions about your end of the deal. If you’d rather not then that’s fine, I’m sure you’ve had to explain this up to your eyeballs. Either way, thanks for a superb piece of entertainment that stuck with me for years.
I think, since Halloween 1992 was a Saturday, ‘bedtime’ would have been more flexible.
